Convicted fraudster Raymond Lavigne collecting $2M pension behind bars

Author: Nick Bergamini 2013/08/12

Former Senator and MP Raymond Lavigne is making headlines as he campaigns to be released from prison after serving only two months of his six month sentence for breach of trust and fraud. He was convicted after revelations that he used his Senate staffer to cut down trees on his private property during Senate hours.

But it will surprise many to learn that despite the conviction, he is still collecting his parliamentary pension behind bars. That's because lax rules surrounding MP and Senator pensions doesn't stipulate that politicians convicted of defrauding taxpayers be stripped of their pension. The CTF calculates that his pension is worth $67,611 annually indexed to inflation. If he lives until age 90 - the average lifespan of parliamentary plan members - he will receive just over $2 million from taxpayers.

In response to the ongoing Senate expenses scandal, in May the CTF called for Accountability Act 2.0, which among a number of reforms, would see politicians convicted of ripping off taxpayers barred from collecting their pensions.

Make your voice heard by signing the petition that would see Raymond Lavigne and other convicted politicians lose their gold-plated pensions.
